Want to make music, but no ideas come up? Put some furries in a toaster!

Furries in a Toaster is a one-page, journaling TTRPG about creating your own silly and colorful furry/animal music artist. This game can also work as a tool for generating ideas for songs if you like to create music, including song mashups! (but no DAWs, instruments or music theory knowledge are actually needed to play this game)

What You Need To Play

- The rulebook (it fits in a single A4 paper sheet; there's also an optional helper you can print on the back side, but it's not needed to play the game)
- A twenty-sided die
- Pen and paper (or something you can write or draw on overall)

The Game Itself

In Furries in a Toaster, you first create your character/alias, either randomly by using a 20-sided die or manually with your own preferences. The character creator has A LOT of options to choose from, making sure you can make as many different aliases as your heart desires!

In this game, more than the music itself though, you write your creative process for this potential song (or even a whole album). You may optionally use this very journal to make your own, real songs too! Think of this as how a game designer would use a GDD (Game Design Document) to document everything they need to make their game before actually developing it (though in a more casual way).

This game is legit a hidden gem. A simple premise but the wide diversity of characters and music options leaves so much to expand on. While I am not musically inclined and did not opt to write any songs, I did find the character creation wonderful. This is going on my list of recommend solo rpgs (especially for character creation). Also below is a little bit of what I wrote if folks wanna see it!

Hatom is a neon butterfly with a bubbly personality. In fact, his hyper obsession with chiptune music is a result of endless nights at his N64. Hatom wants to develop their music skills and does so in their basement. He has a few arcade systems to match his weeby aesthetic and is called the “Weeb” of his friend group. But that’s okay. He uses his music and his beats to send a rhythm that will impress others and most certainly himself. Now he just has to make time rather than watching whatever schlocky isekai that is out this season.

“Thrash Panda laying a new jam on my Armin Van Buuren and Deafheaven fans. Check out my solo-crushing new single, ‘I know nothing (about Metal)’!”

Not only am I new to TTRPGs, but I don’t like metal or trance lol. I do listen to prog rock and EDM, so I thought of creating a song similar to that where it starts heavy like Rammstein/Deafheaven with drums, screaming, then slows down with melodic prog rock. There’s a super fast-paced solo riff in the middle where my Orange Raccoon thrashes it out for two minutes, while making terrible jokes about dumpster diving panda treats.

Really fun 1-pager! Gonna see if i can get a genre I know next.

Oh yes and the song fits in a Newgrounds game (which I’m old enough to rmb!). Maybe something hardcore like the stickman fights 😂

Thank you so much for the comment!

The game idea is SO meta without taking itself too seriously or punching down and that is wonderful to see. A truly unique idea and view for a solo ttrpg.

"My name is Detective Scales, PI. I'm a brown deer/crocodile hybrid with modest antlers and an award winning smile filled with sharp teeth. I've taken a break from crime-fighting to lay down some Lo-Fi tunes. My new album, Mysteries to Relax To, drops soon, and promises to provide a safe space for those in need."

On top of giving me a new personality (Thanks, Barb!), this game is wonderfully simple and exceptionally imaginative! Furry music is top tier and needs to be talked about more. Well done, friend!

OMG That's amazing!! (No prob!)

And thank you so much, I'm glad you liked the game! (´• ω •`) ♡
